Consultancy and Training

Consultancy

Consultancy has something of a bad name. Often the name means 'someone who is paid a lot of money for talking rubbish'. This is NOT the kind of consultancy I am interested in.

For me, consultancy means practical help. We should always be able to say what outcomes we expect to see. In looking at one office's printing costs, for example, I found that a £700 saving could be made every year by replacing ink-jet printers with Laser printers. Added to that, the cost of paper could be reduced significantly by pre-setting documents to print double-sided by default and replacing the fax machine with one that enabled scanning to PDF. This added the benefit of being able to email paper documents directly, rather than fax them in the first place.

Here are some typical areas you might like me to examine:

Training

Learning is essential for everyone. By learning new skills that help people work more effectively, they feel valued by their employer. Investment in learning is rarely wasted because employers win twice: once for getting better staff, twice for having more motivated staff.

These are common areas for training, but by no means an exhaustive list:

Pricing

I price according to the time it will take to complete a project. For consultancy this will include preparation and research time. For training it will include planning and follow-up time. By calculating the hours up front I can provide a fixed price. If it takes me longer, that's my loss not yours.
